Mitch Rose’s first half header was enough to earn the Mariners their first home win of the campaign against in-form Crewe at Blundell Park.
Crewe suffered a blow early on when debutant Conor Grant was stretchered off following a collision with Rose.
The former Newport man was fully involved in the action and nearly volleyed his side in front soon after.
But the midfielder did get his goal on 36 minutes when he leapt to meet Siriki Dembele’s cross.
Town dominated the second period with JJ Hooper coming close and then Zak Mills striking the bar.
The Railwaymen came closest late on when Chris Porter was denied twice in quick succession, firstly by a reflex stop from James McKeown and then by a goal line clearance from Karleigh Osborne.
