GRIMSBY TOWN 0 CREWE ALEXANDRA 3 (Maynard, O’Connor, Lowe (pen))
Tuesday 22-08-06, Carling Cup First Round |Att: 1,635
Grimsby Town were dumped out of the Carling Cup by an impressive Crewe side at Blundell Park. The Railwaymen had struggled up until that point in their season but really hit the ground running on their trip to Cleethorpes.
Town played some neat football in the opening stages and had chances through Isaiah Rankin and Ciaran Toner but it was the visitors who took the lead on 37 minutes. The Mariners sloppily conceded possession in midfield and Luke Varney fed Nicky Maynard who hammered the ball beyond Phil Barnes.
Graham Rodger introduced Michael Reddy to the fray on 68 minutes in an effort to drag the side back into the tie but it was Alex who doubled their advantage just five minutes later. Town were on the attack once more when Varney broke away at pace. This time the Crewe forward found Michael O’Connor who made no mistake from the edge of the area.
Crewe sealed the victory on 86 minutes when Tom Newey was harshly adjudged to have upended Maynard and ex-Chester star Ryan Lowe made no mistake from the spot.
