A much-changed Grimsby Town side slipped to a 1-0 defeat at Tranmere Rovers to end the regular 2015/16 campaign.
There were eight changes for the Mariners, including a debut for goalkeeping coach Andy Warrington, deputising for James McKeown, and a first league start for former Arsenal youngster Conor Henderson.
The Mariners started the better of the two sides and were unfortunate not to be in front when Nathan Arnold worked his way into the box, only to see home stopper Scott Davies pull off the save.
Midway through the first half the hosts took the lead when Shaun Pearson deflected a cross beyond Warrington and Rovers’ midfielder Steven Jennings was on hand to tap the ball over the goal line.
And it was almost two moments later but Warrington pulled off a fine save to deny James Norwood, after the former Forest Green man had streaked away from the Mariners’ defence.
The home side pushed for a second goal in the second half but Warrington was again good form to turn away a powerful effort from winger Adam Mekki.
Town rallied late on and Ryan Jennings was unlucky to see a volley flash just wide of the mark after substitute Josh Venney saw his initial effort charged down.
