The Mariners slumped to the foot of the League Two table after a horrifying 4-0 loss at home to previously-winless Crewe.
Town never got going on a forgettable afternoon and they allowed the visitors to plunder four goals without response.
The Railwaymen opened the scoring just after the half-hour mark. Town inexplicably gave the ball away from a corner and, after a lightning quick counter account, the ball ended up in the net after Calvin Zola acrobatically flicked the ball over his head and debutant goalkeeper Tommy Forecast.
Zola’s second arrived on the stroke of half time. The Mariners conceded possession in midfield and Byron Moore was afforded time and space to pick out the head of the unmarked Zola who scored.
Just 30 seconds after the restart the Mariners were 3-0 behind. Nick Hegarty conceded a penalty for fouling Moore and captain Billy Jones stepped up to score.
The visitors should have had more goals as they ran rampant in the second half and only the keeping of Forecast kept the score down as Zola.
Moore, substitute Clayton Donaldson and Steven Schumacher all had chances to score – the latter seeing his goal chalked off for offside.
The rout was completed in the final minute. Forecast did well to tip John Brayford’s free kick onto the post but Moore was on hand to tap home for a deserved strike.
