Right Wing: Dai
Collier
Diminutive wide man who was one of the Mariners’ stars of the early-20s,
spending two seasons with the club between 1920 and 1922, having arrived from
Mid-Rhondda. Dai played 44 times for Town, scoring 13 times and was rewarded
for his displays with a cap for Wales against Scotland in 1921. Described as a
fast player who was clever with the ball and fearless in the tackle, Dai went
on to serve for the 16th Welsh Regiment.
Centre Midfield: Paul
Trollope
A loan signing from Derby in August 1996, Welsh international Paul Trollope
scored once for Town in seven appearances, that coming in a 6-1 defeat to
Bolton Wanderers. Noted for his neat passing, Paul is best remembered for
spells with Torquay, Fulham, Northampton and Bristol Rovers, spending five
years in charge of the latter between 2005 and 2010. In 2006/07, Trollope led
Rovers to the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Final, where they were beaten by
Doncaster, although they were then promoted through the play-offs to League One
later in the campaign. Paul is now on the coaching staff at Norwich City.
Centre Midfield:
Dickie Morris
An attack-minded player who turned to football after returning from the
Second Boer War in 1902. Made his name at Liverpool, where he was described as ‘one
of the trickiest players to kick a ball’ and Leeds City, where his signing was
a major coup and he was lauded as a ‘clever exponent of the forward game’. His
form for Town in his one season at Blundell Park, 1906/07, saw him recalled to
the Welsh squad and he ended the campaign with seven goals in 24 games before
ending his career with Plymouth, Reading and Huddersfield.
