Grimsby Town manager Michael Jolley is set to add another Swedish defender to his ranks at Blundell Park, according to a report in the country’s Sportbladet.
It was speculated on this site on New Year’s EveIt was speculated on this site on New Year’s Eve that Brommapojkarna centre-half Ludvig Öhman could be on Jolley’s wanted list for the January transfer window, now the Swedish sports papers have confirmed that the 27-year-old is Blundell Park bound.
Jolley has moved quickly to tie up a deal for a player that he knows well from their time together at AFC Eskilstuna, with interest expected to pick up from elsewhere in Sweden during the country’s close season.
And it is believed that the Mariners have paid an undisclosed five-figure fee for the defender, who was on Chelsea’s radar in 2013.
The report in Sportbladet reads: “Brommapojkarna went down from the Allsvenskan in 2018. Ludvig Öhman will not follow them down in [to the] Superettan. The centre back will continue his career in England.
“Grimsby agreed with BP on Öhman. [He] had two years left on his contract with the Superettan club. The central defender is expected to become ready for the League Two club next week.”
“Öhman will be reunited with Michael Jolley, [who] he had as a coach in AFC Eskilstuna when they played in Allsvenskan back in 2017.”
Sources in Sweden claim Ludvig was not seen at the first day of pre-season training with Brommapojkarna and, in addition, the Swedish club have announced the loan signing of Marcus Hansson, a central defender from Djurgården.
Öhman, who worked his way into being one of the standout performers in the Brommapojkarna side last season, is not believed to have a relegation release clause in his contract, but the Swedish side will only want a nominal fee for the player’s services.
The defender began his career with Sandakerns SK, before joining Kalmar FF, where he made his senior bow.
He spent five years with Kalmar, playing 57 league games and then spent a season in Japan with Nagoya Grampus.
Returning to Sweden with AFC Eskilstuna, he scored twice in 26 league games, before joining IF Brommapojkarna – where he played 22 times for the club.
