Flashback | Grimsby Town 4 Mansfield Town 1

Grimsby Town 4 (Artus, G Pearson (2), Colbeck) Mansfield Town 1 (Rhead)

Monday 27 August 2012 | Football Conference | Blundell Park | 3,397

The Mariners registered an excellent Bank Holiday victory over Mansfield Town at Blundell Park, running out 4-1 winners thanks to goals from Frankie Artus, a brace from Greg Pearson and a further strike from Joe Colbeck.

Town dominated the game on an overcast afternoon with Pearson and Artus going close in the opening stages. The deadlock was finally broken on 35 minutes when Artus turned smartly on the edge of the box and fired a left-foot drive into the top corner, beyond the dive of Alan Marriott in the Stags’ goal.

It was 2-0 on the stroke of half-time when Aswad Thomas was felled on the right side of the box and Pearson sent the penalty down the centre.

Just after the hour the Mariners added the third when Joe Colbeck hammered home a loose ball following a Pearson cutback.

And Pearson’s second came on 76 minutes when he looped a header home at the near post from Artus’ corner.

Mansfield’s miserable afternoon continued when Gary Roberts was dismissed with eight minutes remaining, although the visitors did net a consolation four minutes later when substitute Matt Rhead was left unmarked at the far post to head home.
