On This Day | Birmingham City 4 Grimsby Town 0

REMINDED by the Birmingham City Twitter page that it is 14 years today since the Blues hammered the Mariners 4-0 in a Division One match at St Andrews.

It was an Easter Saturday clash with both sides needing the points for very different reasons.

Despite a run of one defeat in seven games, the Mariners were still in trouble at the foot of the division. In contrast, the Blues were pushing into the play-off places.

Another contrast between the two sides was their transfer deadline day dealings. The Mariners brought in several players but had just two of those signings in their ranks, strikers Willie Falconer and Paul Robinson, who had scored just one goal between them since October 2001.

But Blues’ boss Steve Bruce was able to drop £700,000 to bring Celtic defender Olivier Tebily to the club, as well as the loan capture of Northern Irish international Michael Hughes, who had commanded a seven-figure fee at parent club Wimbledon.

City boasted two future Mariners in their ranks, midfielders Bryan Hughes and Curtis Woodhouse and their healthy position meant they could leave £5-million worth of talent on the bench, including £2-million striker Geoff Horsfield.

Unfortunately for Town, the hosts dominated the game and were well worth their 4-0 victory.

Hughes opened the scoring on 22 minutes. Jeff Kenna got the byline and his deep cross was headed down by Tommy Mooney for the Liverpudlian to pick his spot from 15 yards.

And Hughes doubled his and the Blues’ tally, slotting home from Stan Lazaridis’ left wing cross.

It got worse for the Mariners after the break, Stern John rising unmarked to head home Tom Williams’ cross at the far post.

The fourth goal arrived on 64 minites when Damien Johnson charged down a Tony Gallimore clearance and ran through unchallenged to slot the ball through Danny Coyne’s legs.

Victory propelled the home side into the top six and they would go onto win promotion to the Premier League. But despite the loss, Town secured survival with a game to spare.
