The Lincolnshire derby ended in stalemate as neither side could break the deadlock at Sincil Bank.
Backed by over 1200 vociferous fans, the Mariners, who included new loan signings Nicky Featherstone and Michael Coulson in their ranks, started the brighter of the two sides and Danny North tested Rob Burch in the home goal after a neat turn and shot.
The hosts responded well with Jamie Clarke, who scored a hat trick against Town last season for Accrington, looking lively. The closest they came to opening the scoring though was a snap shot from former Mariners’ loanee Anthony Pulis, which cleared the crossbar.
The visitors had a loud appeal for a penalty turned down shortly before the interval. Featherstone threaded a ball into the path of Peter Sweeney, who collected but was upended by a combination of goalkeeper Burch and big defender Adam Watts.
Both sides upped the tempo after the break and it became an end-to-end encounter, although neither goalkeeper was called into much action. Nick Colgan was the first to pull off a top-drawer save when he pushed away Clarke’s effort after a pull-back from Michael Gordon.
The Mariners responded well and Paul Linwood flashed a header inches wide of the target from a Featherstone cross before substitute Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro troubled the home defence with his direct running down the channels.
Sweeney was again in the thick of the action when he flicked away a goalbound effort from defender Watts as the home side pressured from a series of corners.
Red Imps’ substitute Rene Howe then wasted a great opportunity for the hosts as he burst clear with a four-on-two advantage but elected to pull a shot well wide of the target.
