Title Race is on after Town Sting the Bees

Screen shot 2015-01-18 at 18.29.47THE VANARAMA Conference title race is well and truly on after Grimsby Town sent long-time leaders Barnet spiralling to a second successive defeat after an excellent 3-1 victory in this televised clash at Blundell Park.

Martin Allen’s side looked to be on their way to another victory after top scorer John Akinde netted a sixth-minute penalty but that lead was overturned within ten minutes thanks to strikes from Ollie Palmer and Lenell John-Lewis’ own spot kick.

Despite a spirited start to the second half, it was the Mariners who took full control of the game on 52 minutes when Jack Mackreth slid home to cap off a fine team move. Continue reading

Former Chelsea Stopper on Wimbledon, Liverpool, the FA Cup and the Mariners

FROM WIMBLEDON to Wembley to the World Cup, goalkeeper Dave Beasant will forever be remembered for being the first goalkeeper to save a penalty in an FA Cup Final, when he denied John Aldridge on the way to the Dons’ famous 1-0 victory in 1988.

What many football fans outside North East Lincolnshire will forget is that the stopper, affectionately referred to as ‘Lurch’, had to resurrect his career with Grimsby Town after being cast onto the scrap heap at Chelsea.

In 2006, I was fortunate enough to sit down with the former England international, who talked about everything from the ’88 Final to his spell in Cleethorpes to the fortunes of then-club Fulham. Continue reading
